This is what Kay and Adz get up to when their dinner is late... never mind that mum is blogging away tirelessly :-)

The lyrics, music and vocals are all by Kay, featuring Adz. Pictures are from my blog. I wanted to just share the song, but Blogger didn't allow an audio file.

I will be back soon with recipes, just taking a short break while my in-laws are here.

Chocolate Coconut Marzipan Macaroon 2

Choclette, over at Chocolate Log Blog announced that this month's special ingredient for We Should Cocoa is marzipan. See, this is why its called a blogger's challenge. I had no idea, other than a simnel cake, how I could include chocolate and marzipan in one dessert. So it definitely was a challenge for me.

Marzipan also reminded me of a story involving me and Kay early on in our relationship. I always claim I was a naive, innocent girl who got sucked into the big, bad wolf's net. Kay, strongly disputes this claim, calling me a little schemer, who knew exactly what she was getting into... and that is an argument that will go on long after we're sitting all doddery in our retirement chairs in an old age home somewhere :-) Or until one of us kicks the bucket, after which the other's version will reign supreme...

Med style couscous salad 3

The last few days have been mad. My in-laws are arriving and I have been running around like a cleaning dervish, making sure all exposed and open surfaces are tidy, sparkling and everything that's not required has been willy-nilly shoved into drawers and closets [luckily in-laws are the polite kind, they won't peer into any drawers :-)] Plus the danged cat has been following me around, and everytime I clean a floor or a couch he sits his furry arse on it, or rolls around, leading to a yelling and chasing around with a broom match... sigh!

Chilly Chicken 2

Chilly Chicken 3

If the title of this post seems a bit weird, well, it is. South Indian Chinese food is a well known Indian food phenomenon. Its spicy to the point of tears, and the taste is completely unique and distinctive (and nothing like authentic Chinese food). I can still remember the first time I ate Chinese food in Delhi - I turned to my friend and plaintively said, 'but it doesn't taste Chinese at all'. Boy, I was so not a world foodie at 20!!

Last Sunday was a day to remember for Aditi. First, she had her first ever unparented swimming lesson. Very exciting for her, and brilliant for me, as I sat on the side and shot the breeze with other mums. She loved it, and had a lot of fun, and made friends so very quickly. I felt a little bit excluded, as I realised that my baby girl is growing up, and before I know it, she will be getting her first tattoo (gah!) and leaving home... but that's how life is, and we all live and learn.

Northern bean hotpot 1

I was chuffed to bits when I won Jacqueline's Slow Cooking Challenge over at Tinned Tomatoes. I was even more pleased because the prize was a copy of 'Market Vegetarian' by Ross Dobson. When the book arrived this week, I was so excited, that Kay commented that I was acting like I'd never won anything in my life. Well, I hadn't... not after those singing competitions in college anyway :-)

First my news. I have found out that a lovely person (thank you!) has nominated my blog for Babble's Top 100 Food Mom Blogs for 2011 in the 'Your Favourites' section.. To say I am super excited would be a mild understatement. Eeeeeeeeeeee!!!! I am excited!! Are you? Probably not :-) But I am! And I have a favour to ask of you. If you like my blog and enjoy my recipes, please could you go over to Babble and say you like me? All you have to do is click on the 'I like this' button beside my name. I am listed as Michelle Peters-Jones, and right now I am on Page 1 by popularity and Page 4, alphabetically. So, thanks in advance for your support and I really appreciate it! Here's an additonal link, if you missed the first one. You can also nominate any other favourite mom blog there too.

And now that I have got the excitement out of the way, back to the post. For this month's Random Recipe Challenge, Dom over at Belleau Kitchen asked us to make a recipe from our very first cookbooks. Well, turns out I remember my first every cookbook rather well. So well, that I asked my mum to see if she could find a copy for me to own, and lovely mom that she is, she came up trumps.

Kheer 4 COPY

I don't make Indian desserts very often, as I tend to find them quite rich and very sweet. However, after buying my semolina vermicelli, I was quite tempted to make this version of kheer or milk pudding. Normally kheer is made with pudding rice, as its the Indian version of the British rice pudding. But the vermicelli version is very popular in India too.

COPY Mango Shortcake 2

COPY Mango Shortcake 5

My MIL makes a wicked strawberry shortcake. It may have been that cake that convinced me I should marry her son :-) I love it, and some time ago, got the recipe off her. I have been meaning to make it for a while now, but never got around to it.

Last week, I had a box of strawberries waiting to be eaten, and I figured, I should finally make that shortcake. So, that morning, I told Aditi that we would have strawberry shortcake for dessert that night. Her face just crumpled, and she was almost on the verge of tears... I was a bit worried there.
