As you've probably already noticed, the blog has lost a lot of its pictures... I am slowly working to get them back out on here, but its a big task. I never actually realised how many pictures and recipes I had on this blog until I had to go through them to upload on Flickr and then repost. I took the opportunity to rewrite some recipes, and revisit the posts, so I could make them better. So I guess, in a way, there was a silver lining to this blogger induced black cloud. The pictures are not all up yet, but will be by the end of this week, and we can get back to business as usual :-)

But that said, I will also be taking a short blogging break for two or three weeks. One of my best friends is visiting me from Germany, and we have decided to head out into the Rockies for a road trip! I cannot wait... in my opinion there is nowehere as gorgeous as the Rocky Mountains in the summer, and the Jasper-Banff Highway, also called the Icefields Parkway, is simply paradise on earth (well, if you exclude all thr tourists, that is :-)) So after this one, my next post is likely to be at the beginning of August, unless of course I get inspired at a campsite or two or three!

You've probably noticed that the blog has managed to lose a lot of its pictures... its thanks to a glitch with Picasa, and its deleted my Blogger album that hosted all the pictures for the blog! I am trying to sort it out, and hopefully over the next couple days all the pictures should be back on. I think I am going to get rid of Picasa altogether and use Flickr from now on!

I do hate Blogger sometimes :-(

.

A few days ago, I was chatting with mum on the phone, like I pretty much do every couple of days. Funny, isn't it? When I was a teenager living at home, the last thing I wanted to do is talk to mum. Now that I am an adult, and a mum myself, I find myself turning to her almost on every other day. I tell her all my everyday stuff, get advice, get recipes, get tips on looking after Aditi, complain, moan, mutter, gossip, hand out unwanted advice for my sister... and its been a gradual realisation that I don't know everything after all (well, I did when I was a teenager, I suppose)

My mum told me off a few days ago... yes, almost 32 and I still get told off on occasion too :-) I was chatting with her about my blog and how I was enjoying rediscovering the recipes of my childhood, and she sniped that I never appreciated them or ate them when I was a child. That got me thinking. Yes, of course, when you have something all the time you never really learn to appreciate its value or how precious it is. You tend to take things for granted, and suddenly one day you realise its no longer around, and you begin to miss it. A lot. This has been one of my realisations, especially as I have gotten older, and moved further and further away from my home and birthplace.

Masala Dal

Have you ever caught yourself doing something with your child that your own mum used to do when you were little? Or promising yourself that you would never say that one thing, and suddenly, before you know it, you're yelling out 'don't make me come over there...?' Oh yeah! You totally do, right? Even if you aren't a parent, you still catch yourself doing or saying something that your parents used to do. Now 'fess up, and don't deny it :-)

I found myself doing this with Aditi today. As I have previously moaned on here, getting that kid to eat protein that isn't milk based is a serious challenge. Even though she's generally an easy kid to feed, sometimes she has to be coaxed to eat... especially when the weather is hot or she's knackered. And of course, all that crabbiness translates into crabby mum too. So my latest coaxing is something most mums will recognise. Come on now - one bite for grandma, one bite for grandpa, one bite for mummy, one for daddy, one for the cat... and so it goes on until the bowl is empty. And then you wonder how long before they catch on to this one, like they did with the 'ooppeeenn the tunnnnelll, train coming through'! Well, it works, and I refuse to think of anything else beyond that!

Cucumber Kharam

After the meat feasts of last week (when Kay was conveniently away) my heart, stomach and husband decided it was time for a few vegetarian dishes (there is still one more meat dish to come, but I decided it could wait for a few more days).

I realised some time ago, that I haven't posted as many Mangalorean or indeed, Indian vegetable dishes as much, so its time for a change. Normally when I cook vegetables, especially Indian style, they tend to be more of an afterthought than the star of the show. But at the same time, we almost never have a meal that doesn't have some kind of vegetable in it. It could be anything from a simple side of steamed broccoli, to a spiced vegetable fugath (with oil, mustard seeds and coconut) or a mixed vegetable curry. But its not often that I post them up. I mean, I do have vegetarian dishes on here, but they are usually the stars not the sidekicks. And the recipe I am sharing today has always been a sidekick :-)
