Winner! Congratulations Faye Bowers. I'll be in touch to get your details. My Duchess Bake Shop Cookbook is still up for grabs until Wednesday evening, so hurry.

Also, there may be a little surprise announcement then too.

When Spices and Seasons first arrived on my doorstep, I was in the middle of a crazy time at work and in life. So I gave it a cursory look through, and it went on my shelf in my 'review later' pile. A month later, I was overwhelmed with produce from my garden and from Prairie Urban Farm, and I remembered this book. And then kicked myself for not giving it more attention early on, because, seriously? This book is a gem for seasonal Indian cooking and I can't believe it wasted so much time on my shelf.

The recipes in this book are easy, delicious and best of all, made with produce available in a Western garden. And more importantly, seasonal. Indian cuisine is very seasonal, and, growing up, what we ate was what my dad was able to find in the markets. We rarely had imported food (erm, Kraft tinned cheese, sometimes, maybe) but ninety nine percent of the time, we ate fruit and vegetables and protein as and when it was available. I still remember craving a crab dish once, and my dad telling me that there were no crabs in the market as it was close to new moon, and crabs were best caught mid-lunar cycle. I had to make do with fish instead (and yes, I am still grumpy)

Coming back to this book, I enjoyed it so much, I knew I had to grab a copy to give away too. The recipes in this book are perfect if you're just beginning to start cooking Indian food, and are easy enough for beginners. The flavours are quintessentially Indian, with the lightest of Western touches that keeps it perfectly seasonal and fresh. The dishes that I tried were fresh, light and healthy and quite a few of them were quick to put together after a long day at work.

So what are you waiting for? Time to spice up your life and enter the giveaway below.

How something so great could come from Lentils, I have no idea. Oh no, hang on! Saag Paneer! I LOVE paneer. That's the thing about Indian food, you don't even need meat to make it taste good!

  7. I'd love to win but I don't think you'd ship to the UK?! But anyway, ultimate favourite Indian dish is saag paneer with aloo gobi on the side. That said, brinjal bhaji is usually what I order at my local Indian restaurant but never actually made myself.
