The day I discovered elderflower cordial is probably one of the best days of my life. I was at a summer picnic, hosted by one of my professors in his beautiful house in the English countryside. It was a hot, sunny summer day, one of those gorgeous days that, as every Brit knows, come only once in a blue moon. Prof's garden backed out on to lovely, green, cool woods, and it was like every single one of my memories of all those English storybooks I read as a kid come alive.
Everyone was outside in the garden. The table was loaded with cakes, summer strawberries, cream, small sandwiches and (I got wickedly excited when I saw this) ginger beer. There were also pitchers of elderflower cordial, and the first time I tried this fragrant, floral, tangy, quintessentially British drink, I was hooked.
And, to make things even better, one of my absolute favourite British chefs comes up with this. No stopping me now.

I fell in love with making ice creams way back on one of my first trips to Canada. My father-in-law who is usually the inspiration for most of the ice creams on this blog, has a really old Donvier that he pulled out one year, and made an absolute smashing lime sorbet. Can you say hooked? Well, yeah. Hooked.
Ever since then, one of my dreams on moving back to Canada has been to get my very own ice cream machine... and no sooner did I land in Edmonton, than I got myself my very own ice cream machine. And once I had it, I don't think I've ever bought ice cream again. Because, and you have to trust me on this one, there is nothing quite like homemade ice cream. Especially as a summer's hurrah!

Finally! Finally!!! I don't care how many exclamation points I use for these two words, because they are well deserved. Finally, warmth has come to Edmonton. And we seemed to have completely skipped over spring, going to straight to summer, which, to be perfectly honest, that is absolutely fine with me. So to celebrate, the first thing I got out was my trusty popsicle maker.
Oh popsicles, I have missed you! There is something so innocent and happy about a icy cold popsicle that takes you right back to childhood and memories of running after the ice candy man and begging the parents for an extra two rupees on the way to school, so we could splurge on a bright, artificially coloured ice candy, after a hard school's day, that turned our tongues a blazing red or orange and put us on a sugar high for the rest of the evening. Or every day after school, when we would head into this tiny 'goodangadi' or corner shop, conveniently located right outside the school gates and buy ourselves a tasty, chilled freezie for 50 paise (less than a half a penny) that we would then suck on all the way back home.
Of course, mother dearest would be horrified and threaten us with all sorts of dire consequences if we spoiled our appetite for dinner, notwithstanding all the diseases we would get from the contaminated water. But we were young and our immune systems were healthy and that was all that mattered when it came to these tastes of childhood.

I was pretty excited when Poptails by Erin Nichols landed on my doorstep. Its been the kind of hot, sweaty summer that's just calling out for long, lazy evenings out on the deck trying hard to cool down. Not that I am complaining about the heat, mind... I'll take it over -42 any day.
Poptails is a cute little book, easy to read, and just the right size to carry around the kitchen. The theme of the book is simple, as the title suggests, it takes classic cocktails and turns them into popsicles. The idea is refreshingly interesting, and the recipes are all relatively easy once you master the art of preparing the alcohol for the recipe. Erin keeps the language simple, and I love her little 'asides' in the book, and it feels like she's chatting away with you throughout.
